The Sri Lanka High Commission in London held a Pirith chanting ceremony on 18th May 2016 followed by a Heel Dana the following day to commemorate the festival of Vesak.

During the religious ceremony, blessings were invoked on the war heroes who had laid down their lives in defence of the motherland and all those affected during the recent floods and landslides.

President Maithripala Sirisena arrived in London on 11th May 2016 and was received on arrival by Deputy Lieutenant to Her Majesty the Queen, Bruce Holder, Special Representative of the Secretary of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs, Kathryn Colvin, Acting High Commissioner Sugeeshwara Gunaratna and the staff of the High Commission.

The Sri Lankan High Commission,on 8th April 2016,held a reception to felicitate Chevening Scholars from Sri Lanka.Currently, there are six Chevening Scholars from Sri Lanka studying in various Universities in the UK. Representatives from the Chevening Secretariat also attended the reception.

The Sri Lanka High Commission in London commemorated the 68th Independence Day of Sri Lanka on 4th February with the hoisting of the national flag and recital of the national anthem followed by a two-minute silence to remember all those who sacrificed their lives in the defence of the country.  Religious observances were conducted by the Ven. Bogoda Seelawimala Nayaka Thero, Sivasri Supramaniyak Kurukkal, Rev. Fr. Daya Perera, and Moulavi Mohamed Anas, respectively. The event was attended by a wide cross-section of members of the Sri Lankan community in the UK.

08 01 2016 pirith Ceremony

A Buddha Pooja and Seth Pirith chanting, organised by the Sri Lanka High Commission, was held at the London Buddhist Vihara on 8th January 2016 to commemorate the first anniversary of the inauguration in office of President Maithripala Sirisena. Chief Sangha Nayaka of Great Britain and the Chief incumbent of the London Buddhist Vihara, Most Ven. Bogoda Seelawimala Nayaka Thero and resident monks of the Vihara invoked blessings on President Maithripala Sirisena, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, the Government and the people of Sri Lanka.
