|Deepavali, 'festival of lights' celebrated in London|
The High Commission of Sri Lanka in London celebrated Deepavali on 31 October 2016 amidst a large gathering of the Sri Lankan community.
The event commenced with the blessings conducted by Rev. Ramanada Kurukkal. Addressing the gathering, Rev. Ramanada kurukkal appreciated the High Commission's efforts in organizing the event to celebrate this important Hindu cultural festival.
High Commissioner Amari Wijewardene, welcomed the guests and remarked on the significance of celebrating Deepavali which spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. She also stressed on the importance of inculcating that spirit in every Sri Lankan today as the country continues to embark on the path of nation building and creating meaningful reconciliation amongst the Sri Lankan people.
The Deepavali celebrations included spectacular Bharatanatyam dance and vocal performances by the students of the Ananthalayas Music Academy, Kalasegaka UK and Sakthi Fine Arts Group in London.
The guests were treated to traditional sweets and a vegetarian dinner, in keeping with the spirit of Deepavali.
